Extracellular recordings
Got a question
concerning the useability of NG108-15 cells (neuroblastoma x glioma
cell line) for extracellular recordings. Are such cells capable of
bursting?

Re: Extracellular recordings
I just had a look a PubMed and found one paper showing data, that they are able to do action potentials.
Biosens Bioelectron. 2006 Mar 15;21(9):1804-11. Epub 2006 Feb 3.
The authors (JJ Hickman & P Molnar) are working with the MEA system as well (however, they did use it with different cells). I would recommend to get in touch with them directly to discuss options and limitaions of the NG108-15 cellline.
Greetings
Thomas

Re: Extracellular recordings
We've tried this - out of interest on standard planar MEAs+Potter rings.
NBs grow nicely and treatment with agents such as retinoic acid cause differentiation into a type that does demonstrate action potentials in response to electrical stimulation (via an STG2004).
However, we didn't see any spontaneous activity, anything that could - by any stretch of the imagination - be called a 'burst' or indications of connectivity between cells (responses to electrically applied stimuli only elicited responses on the stimulated electrode).
There's probably more mileage to this but we haven't pursued it further for now.
